Social Media and Society

Reading Passage

Read the passage carefully before answering the questions.

Social media has become an important part of everyday life. Platforms that allow people to share messages, photographs, videos, and opinions have changed the way individuals communicate with one another. These platforms can help people maintain relationships across long distances, discover new ideas, and participate in communities that share their interests. One of the most significant changes is the speed at which information can spread. A news story, personal experience, or public announcement can reach thousands of people within minutes. This can be useful when important information needs to be shared quickly. However, the same speed can allow inaccurate or misleading information to spread before people have had time to check whether it is reliable. Social media has also changed the way people present themselves. Users often choose which parts of their lives to share, and they may carefully select photographs or descriptions that create a particular impression. As a result, what people see online may not represent someone's complete or ordinary life. Another issue is the effect of constant comparison. When users repeatedly see carefully selected images of other people's achievements, vacations, or lifestyles, they may compare those images with their own experiences. This does not necessarily mean that social media is harmful, but it suggests that users need to understand that online content is often selective. At the same time, social media can provide opportunities for positive social action. People can organize community projects, raise awareness about important issues, support small businesses, and connect individuals who might otherwise remain isolated. The influence of social media therefore depends partly on how it is used. The technology itself provides opportunities for communication and participation, but users need to think critically about the information they encounter and the way they present themselves online. A balanced approach can help people benefit from social media without allowing it to control every part of their social lives.
