Reading Passage

Read the passage carefully before answering the questions.

Globalization has made it easier than ever for people, businesses, and ideas to move across national borders. Improvements in transportation, communication, and digital technology have connected societies that were once separated by great distances. As a result, people can now experience food, music, films, languages, and traditions from many different parts of the world. One visible effect of globalization is the international spread of cultural products. A song created in one country can become popular on another continent within a short period of time. Restaurants serving foreign cuisines can be found in cities around the world, and films and television programs can reach audiences far beyond their country of origin. This exchange can create opportunities for cultural understanding. When people learn about traditions that are different from their own, they may become more aware of different ways of thinking and living. International travel, education, and online communication can also allow people to form relationships with others from different cultural backgrounds. However, globalization can also create concerns about cultural identity. When the same international brands, entertainment, and consumer habits become common in many countries, some local traditions may receive less attention. Smaller cultural groups may find it difficult to compete with global companies that have much larger resources and international audiences. Language is another important part of this discussion. Global communication often depends on widely used languages, which can make international communication easier. At the same time, languages with fewer speakers may face difficulties if younger generations use them less frequently. When a language disappears, part of the cultural knowledge connected to that language may also be lost. Globalization does not necessarily mean that all cultures will become identical. Local communities often adapt global influences to fit their own traditions and preferences. For example, an international food chain may offer different products in different countries because local customers have different tastes. The relationship between globalization and culture is therefore complex. Greater international contact can create opportunities for cultural exchange and cooperation, but it can also put pressure on local traditions and languages. The challenge is not simply to accept or reject globalization, but to find ways for communities to participate in global society while continuing to preserve important parts of their cultural identity.
